The GTMI

The Global Tailings Management Institute was established in response to catastrophic mining disasters, including the 2019 Brumadinho dam collapse that claimed 272 lives. Co-founded by ICMM, the United Nations Environment Programme, and the Principles for Responsible Investment, the GTMI oversees implementation of the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM). It's an independent, non-profit institution responsible for auditing, verification, and certification of tailings facilities worldwide.

Our Approach

Working alongside communications consultancy Stardust Global, Dieselbrook was appointed as the creative agency to develop the GTMI's brand identity and website. The brief was significant: create a visual identity for an organisation that would hold global mining companies accountable to the highest safety standards.

The brand needed to convey authority, independence, and a serious commitment to protecting both people and the environment. We developed a complete identity system that works across institutional, digital, and social channels, with a website designed to communicate complex compliance frameworks clearly to multiple stakeholder groups.

The Logo

The logo was designed to work in both light and dark applications, essential for an organisation that appears across everything from UN reports to mining company documentation. The mark balances institutional gravitas with modern clarity, avoiding the visual clichés common in environmental or regulatory branding.

Brand Positioning

The GTMI sits at a unique intersection: a technical regulatory body that must also communicate effectively with affected communities, investors, mining operators, and environmental groups. The brand positioning reflects this. The visual language is professional and restrained, but not cold. The website presents dense technical content in a way that's navigable and credible, with clear pathways for signatories, supporters, and auditors.

Visual System

We developed a comprehensive visual system including iconography, imagery direction, colour palette, pattern library, and holding shapes. The system gives the GTMI flexibility to produce consistent communications across reports, presentations, digital platforms, and social media without losing coherence.

Socials

The social media presence was designed for LinkedIn, the primary channel for engaging with industry stakeholders. We created profile assets, banner templates, and carousel formats that maintain brand consistency while allowing for regular content updates.
